David Abercrombie founded Abercrombie Co. in Manhattan in 1892 as an outdoor specialty retailer focused on camping, fishing, and hunting gear. Ezra Fitch joined as an investor, and the business was relaunched as Abercrombie & Fitch in 1904. It later grew from outdoor goods into a broader apparel and lifestyle company, with quality apparel and catalogs forming part of its identity in the 1950s and 1960s. After its 1996 incorporation and initial public offering, the company became independent of The Limited through an exchange offer and spin-off completed in 1998. During the 1990s, its stores helped define the American mall experience, while Mike Jeffries shaped the brand’s youth-focused, tightly controlled visual identity through sexuality, Bruce Weber photography, and the store look policy. In October 2016, Abercrombie & Fitch announced a redefined identity centered on individuality, uniqueness, and a more diverse and inclusive cultural position. Its current public description presents it as a heritage-inspired American lifestyle brand balancing legacy with contemporary expression. Launched in 2002, Fierce is the brand’s defining fragrance, a Woody Aromatic developed by Carlos Benaim, Christophe Laudamiel, and Bruno Jovanovic.
