AFL
AFL originated as the Victorian Football League (VFL), formed in 1896 when leading clubs broke away from the Victorian Football Association; its first season was played in 1897. During the 1980s, the VFL expanded beyond Victoria, adding Brisbane and West Coast in 1987, and changed its name to the Australian Football League in 1990 to reflect its national scope. Adelaide joined in 1991, Fremantle in 1995, Port Adelaide in 1997, Gold Coast in 2011, and Greater Western Sydney in 2012, broadening the competition to 18 teams. AFLW launched in 2017 as an eight-team competition and expanded to 18 teams for the 2023 season. AFL operates as a competition and licensing brand: it owns the AFL and club logos and other competition-related intellectual property, while licensed products require an AFL licensing agreement. Its documented fragrance products are club-specific lines, including an Eau de Toilette in a collectable replica-style premiership cup bottle with interchangeable team plaques.
