Alaïa
Alaïa was founded in Paris in 1964 by Azzedine Alaïa, who formally established the Maison under his name and presented its first Paris fashion show, the Spring–Summer 1983 collection, at rue de Bellechasse. Its identity took shape through sculptural silhouettes, precise cutting, innovative materials, and clothing designed to celebrate and underline the female form. After 1988, the Maison showed only when ready, working outside the conventional fashion calendar. Prada invested in 2000; Azzedine Alaïa bought the company back in 2007, the year the brand became part of Richemont. That year, he also co-founded the association that became the Fondation Azzedine Alaïa, created to preserve his fashion, design, and art collections. Following his death in 2017, Pieter Mulier was appointed the first creative director to succeed the founder in February 2021. During his tenure, the 2024 Guggenheim show and Archetypes collections extended Alaïa’s codes into ready-to-wear. Alaïa announced Mulier’s departure on 30 January 2026; his final Alaïa show was held on 4 March.
