Alexandria Fragrances

Alexandria Fragrances was launched in 2017 by Hany Hafez, whose early relationship with scent developed in his maternal family’s fragrance shops in Cairo, where he learned to mix oils and create fragrances. He opened his first fragrance shop there in early 2002 and maintained it for eight years. After moving to the United States in 2011, Hafez worked at a gas station, restaurant, and as a security guard while saving to start his own business. He is the brand’s owner and operator, as well as its founder and perfumer. Alexandria’s range combines original creations with fragrances presented as inspirations or comparisons to other brands, while stating that it is not affiliated with the brands used for comparison. Its stated rationale was to develop luxury fragrances in response to Hafez’s view that niche-fragrance prices could be unreasonable and performance did not always justify the cost. Hafez 1984, an original creation named after him, was developed around requests for tobacco and vanilla notes. A separate British business is co-owned by Dave Wrench and Rachel Moran and is not a franchise.
