Alfa Romeo
Founded in Milan on 24 June 1910 as A.L.F.A., Alfa Romeo began as Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili and acquired the Italian branch and Portello workshops of French automaker Darracq. In 1915, Nicola Romeo took control, and the name changed to Alfa-Romeo. The company became state-owned after Italy’s IRI took it over in 1933, before Fiat Group acquired it in 1986. Following the merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Groupe PSA, effective 16 January 2021, Alfa Romeo became part of Stellantis. Its public identity brings together Milanese symbolism, Italian style, performance, and sporting heritage; its emblem combines Milan’s red cross with the Visconti Biscione serpent. Motorsport has been a defining historical thread: Alfa Romeo won the first Grand Prix World Championship in 1925 and the first two Formula 1 Championships, in 1950 and 1951. A 1923 Targa Florio victory introduced the four-leaf-clover Quadrifoglio emblem, later associated with the brand’s sportier production cars.
