American Eagle

American Eagle Outfitters opened its first store in 1977 at Twelve Oaks Mall in Novi, Michigan. Schottenstein Stores Corp. purchased the company in 1990, and American Eagle Outfitters became a public company through a NASDAQ offering in 1994. The brand introduced signature denim in 1997, alongside a stated vision of accessible, welcoming retail centered on affordability, diversity, and merchandise made to last. Aerie launched nationwide in 2006, and its #AerieREAL campaign, begun in 2014 with real people and unretouched photography, emphasized authenticity, inclusion, and customer voices. In 2025, a Sydney Sweeney denim campaign prompted public debate about race and Western beauty standards. American Eagle’s fragrance history includes ALIVE, a unisex scent launched during the 2000 back-to-school season and described at the time as a signature fragrance reflecting the brand and its culture.
