American Perfumer

American Perfumer was co-founded in 2018 by Dave Kern and Matt White in Louisville, Kentucky, launching with approximately 30 perfumer-owned brands. It began as a platform bringing independent American perfumers together in one place and moved online after the COVID-19 period. The business operates as a retailer for American-made perfume and as a collaborator on limited editions with independent perfumers, connecting those makers with fragrance enthusiasts while emphasizing their individual creative work. Dave Kern is the brand’s founder and creative director, shaping its collaborations while independent perfumers compose the fragrances. Its editorial and educational work also includes a podcast featuring conversations with American artisan perfumers, active from 2018 through 2025. American Perfumer maintains a House Collection developed under its own name alongside a separate limited-edition program. Colorado, created by Dawn Spencer Hurwitz with Kern as creative director, won the independent category at the 2019 Art and Olfaction Awards.
