Amouage was founded in Oman in 1983 by Sayyid Hamad bin Hamoud Al Busaidi and established as “The Gift of Kings” with the blessing of Sultan Qaboos bin Said. That year, SABCO Group launched Oman Perfumery LLC, publicly known as the House of Amouage, to modernize Oman’s fragrance industry and communicate Omani fragrance heritage internationally. The house combines Omani and broader Arabian perfume culture with modern international perfumery, drawing on heritage materials including frankincense, myrrh, and rosewater; frankincense forms part of its olfactory signature. Its first fragrance, Gold, was launched in 1983 and created by Guy Robert, with Omani frankincense and rose as core inspirations. From 2007, creative director Christopher Chong shaped the house’s fragrance development through linked narratives drawing on literature, art, film, and music.
