Andrée Putman
Andrée Putman’s design career began with styling work at Prisunic and the design agency Mafia. In 1971, she co-founded Créateurs et Industriels with Didier Grumbach, a company associated with discovering emerging fashion designers. She created Ecart International and the Ecart interior-design agency in 1978, with Ecart International reissuing overlooked designers from the 1930s. Her 1984 design for Morgans Hotel in New York became a major career milestone, marked by a disciplined black-and-white checkerboard vocabulary. Putman sold Ecart International in 1994 and founded an eponymous interior-design and design agency in 1997. The studio’s design language is refined, graphic, and contrasting, combining classical elegance with radical modernity. Olivia Putman joined the agency in 2007 and took over after Andrée Putman’s death in 2013, renaming it Studio Putman. In 2025, the studio marked Putman’s centenary with an immersive exhibition at Paris’s Musée des Arts Décoratifs. The brand’s fragrance activity began by the end of 2001 with Préparation Parfumée, created with perfumer Olivia Giacobetti; described as its first fragrance, its success led to a broader collection presented for its 15th anniversary.
