Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol’s public identity fused fine art with advertising, branding, publishing, film, television, and the construction of a public persona, treating the boundary between art and life as part of his practice. The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts was established in New York in 1987 under his will to advance the visual arts and preserve his legacy. In 1989, the Foundation joined the Dia Art Foundation and Carnegie Museums to cofound The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. It serves as steward of Warhol’s legacy and controls licensed uses of WARHOL trademarks and imagery. Fragrance entered the name’s documented commercial history by 1999, when Cofinluxe/Cofci marketed a line with Dorothée Piot credited as perfumer. Warhol also collected perfume bottles, wrote about scent’s connection to memory, and regularly wore fragrance from the early 1960s. Bond No. 9’s collaboration comprises more than 12 fragrances inspired by his art, while the Foundation continues to list perfume among its licensed collaborations, including a partnership with Estée Lauder.
