Anne Klein
Anne Klein formed Anne Klein and Company in 1968 to create elegant sportswear for the modern American woman. Her earlier work with Varden Petites moved junior clothing away from frilly children’s styles toward a more refined, grown-up aesthetic, while the label developed a coordinated-wardrobe approach built around separates and matching accessories. Klein received the Lord & Taylor Award for independent thinking in 1964, became the first designer to win the Neiman Marcus Fashion Leadership Award twice in 1969, and entered the Coty Hall of Fame in 1971. Her participation in the 1973 Battle of Versailles linked the brand to an event credited with shifting fashion influence toward New York. After Klein’s death in 1974, Donna Karan and Louis Dell’Olio interpreted her vision and led the label’s creative continuity. The brand marked its 50th year in business in 2018, and ownership later changed when WHP Global acquired Anne Klein from Premier Brands Group in July 2019.
