Aroma M
Maria McElroy launched Aroma M in 1995 after seven years in Japan, initially bottling fragrances at home after returning to the United States. The brand began with o-cha, a green-tea fragrance that debuted at Bergdorf Goodman in New York and Harrods in London. It later launched a collection at early Sephora stores in the United States and Asia, while McElroy became the first niche perfumer to appear on QVC. Aroma M’s identity combines visual art and aromatherapy with Japanese cultural study, including Kodo, Ikebana, Koto, and Zen Buddhism, alongside McElroy’s Greek heritage, Salt Lake City roots, Kyoto, and travels in North Africa. This perspective shapes the Geisha line, whose core fragrances are named after colors and developed as imagined colors. Geisha Rouge, launched at a major New York department store after two years of refinement, became a cult classic. For its 30th anniversary, Aroma M released Ceremonial Matcha as a nod to o-cha, while McElroy also created the parallel House of Cherry Bomb line with Alexis Karl.
