ASOS launched in June 2000 as an online retailer sourcing products seen in films, television programmes and on celebrities. Founded in London by Nick Robertson and Quentin Griffiths, it initially operated as As Seen on Screen, adopted the ASOS acronym in 2002, and became ASOS plc in August 2003. The business began developing original products and introduced its first own brand, ASOS Design, in 2004. In 2010 it added Marketplace for vintage sellers and independent boutiques, alongside a mobile site, followed by an iOS app in 2011. Today, ASOS combines its own brands with a curated selection of partner brands, with a stated purpose of giving customers confidence to be whoever they want to be. On 4 February 2021, it acquired the Topshop, Topman, Miss Selfridge and HIIT brands; following a 2024 transaction, it retained the exclusive right to design Topshop and Topman products for global distribution under a long-term licence.
