Aspen

Aspen’s fragrance story began in 1989, when Quintessence Inc. launched both a women’s fragrance and Aspen For Men. The Chicago-based company had been formed through a leveraged management buyout of Jovan, and Aspen extended its fragrance activity beyond the established Jovan lines. In December 1989, contemporary reporting identified Quintessence as the maker of the new men’s fragrance. Quintessence was sold to Germany’s Joseph A. Benckiser GmbH in 1991; after Benckiser acquired Coty in 1992, Quintessence was merged into Coty in 1993, bringing Aspen into the Coty portfolio. Aspen’s advertising initially presented a countryside escape shaped by clean forest air and nature. About a decade later, its message shifted toward the aspirational association of Aspen with wealthy consumers. The brand’s principal documented fragrance, Aspen For Men, is a 1989 fresh, green aromatic fougère with aromatic, woody, citrus, lavender, mossy, and coniferous characteristics.
