Atelier de Geste
Founded in New York by designer and artist Beau Rhee after her MFA at Geneva’s Haute école d’art et de design, Atelier de Geste launched its first designs in fall 2013. Rhee’s background in dance, art history, contemporary art, fashion, and Swiss design informs a multidisciplinary studio practice spanning scent, limited-edition design, garments, textiles, objects, and performance. Across these forms, the studio translates movement, gesture, relationships between body and space, color, geometry, and ritual into tactile and sensory works. Perfume entered the practice during Rhee’s MFA studies, when she investigated the relationship between dance and scent with support and training from a historic Grasse perfumery. The first fragrance work accompanied The Ball of Living Matter, a 2012 choreographed performance, with scents conceived to amplify its movements, feelings, and colors. Early scents included Blood Sweat Tears, The Good Earth, and Wild Is the Wind, organized around elemental and movement-related ideas. Blood Sweat Tears was nominated for the 2014 Art & Olfaction Awards, while Stones was an Independent category finalist in 2017. Atelier de Geste’s documented artistic practice includes All Blues from 2015, later performance and exhibition projects, and Shadow of the Sea from 2022.
