Atkinsons 1799

Atkinsons 1799 was established in London in 1799 by James Atkinson, beginning at 44 Gerrard Street in Soho with perfumes, toiletries and a rose-scented bear-grease balm. In 1826, King George IV appointed the house Official Perfumer to the Royal Court of England after encountering one of its English eau de colognes. The business moved to 24 Old Bond Street in Mayfair in 1832; with James’s brother Edward joining in the 1830s, it traded as J. & E. Atkinson Ltd and expanded beyond Britain. Its exhibition record included medals in London, Vienna and Melbourne, followed by gold medals at the Paris Expositions of 1878 and 1889 and the Grand Prix at the 1900 Paris Exposition. After licence sales in the early 2000s, Perfume Holding acquired the brand from Procter & Gamble in 2008 and relaunched it in 2013 around its historical archives and English heritage. EuroItalia acquired Atkinsons 1799 in 2020. Under EuroItalia, the house is presented as an A-gender fragrance brand combining British heritage with modern reinterpretation. At the 2013 relaunch, 24 Old Bond Street was described as the house’s signature fragrance, while James was launched in 2022 as a fragrance explicitly inspired by its founder.
