B.U.M. Equipment

B.U.M. Equipment traces its history to 1986, when it began in a Seattle garage with a cotton-knit sweatshirt bearing an oversized B.U.M. logo. Built around athletic-inspired, logo-driven casualwear, the young sportswear brand was identified by the Los Angeles Times in 1993 as one of California’s most successful. Its early concept and development were associated with founder Derek Federman and Morty Forshpan, who separated in 1988 after disagreements over growth. B.U.M. International filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in April 1996 after disappointing sales and difficulties with retail expansion. In September 1997, a bankruptcy court rejected Tarrant Apparel Group’s proposed asset purchase and approved a creditor-backed reorganization plan, while the brand continued through licensing. That year, B.U.M. Equipment LLC was established by Stephen Wayne and Steven Marra as a privately held licensing and marketing company; it owns and operates the brand. The post-bankruptcy relaunch retained an emphasis on quality, comfort, athletics, and logo-driven products while updating styling for newer consumers. In 2016, B.U.M. entered fragrance and bath through a license with Sheralven Enterprises Ltd.
