Balestra
Balestra was founded in Rome in 1959 by Italian designer Renato Balestra, who opened the maison’s first atelier on Via Gregoriana. He presented his first haute-couture collection in 1961 and debuted at Florence’s Sala Bianca in 1963. His artistic approach shaped the house’s identity, notably through “Embroidery Painting,” a technique of painting directly onto fabric that became associated with his work by the 1970s. The vivid blue known as Blu Balestra, first used on a satin dress in the 1960s, became a continuing visual symbol of the maison. The Renato Balestra brand registration was completed in 1973, followed by a namesake perfume in 1978. Its fragrance history also includes Balestra1924, a unisex aromatic fragrance whose visual language references the original 1971 logo and Blu Balestra. In 2019, the Renato Balestra Archive, containing more than 40,000 sketches and drawings alongside garments and press material, was declared of historical interest by Italy’s Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities. After Renato Balestra’s death in 2022, his daughters Fabiana and Federica and granddaughter Sofia continued the maison, which that year introduced its first prêt-à-porter collection and a new visual identity.
