Barbie

Introduced by Mattel at the New York Toy Fair in 1959, Barbie was created by Ruth Handler after she observed her daughter playing with paper dolls of adult women. Her official birthday is March 9, 1959, the date she was introduced to the public. The brand’s history includes Ken’s introduction in 1961, Barbie’s appearance as an astronaut in 1965, and the introduction of official African American and Latina Barbies in 1980. Mattel refreshed Barbie’s public identity in 2015 and 2016 with new skin tones, hair types, and body shapes, including Curvy Barbie. In 2018, Mattel established the Barbie Dream Gap Project to give girls resources and support to believe in themselves and reach their potential. Greta Gerwig’s 2023 film was Barbie’s first live-action theatrical film and extended the character into Mattel’s film strategy. Mattel remains the owner of the Barbie brand.
