Barneys New York

Founded in 1923 by Barney Pressman at Seventh Avenue and 17th Street in Manhattan, Barneys New York began as a men’s retailer. During the late 1960s and 1970s, Pressman and his son Fred redirected the business from inexpensive goods toward designer fashion and womenswear; in 1976, Barneys introduced Giorgio Armani to the United States. Its public identity developed around discovering and supporting emerging designers, including Comme des Garçons, Yohji Yamamoto, Martin Margiela, Dries Van Noten, Prada, Ann Demeulemeester, Rick Owens, and Alexander Wang, while helping launch the careers of Narciso Rodriguez, Maria Cornejo, and Zac Posen. In the 1980s, Simon Doonan’s window designs helped place the retailer at the intersection of art and commerce, and in 1989 its name changed to Barneys New York. After filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in August 2019, the brand’s intellectual property was acquired by Authentic Brands Group that November. In October 2024, Barneys New York was included in Authentic Luxury Group, a joint venture between Authentic Brands Group and Saks Global. Its fragrance identity is recent: the first Barneys Eau de Parfum collection launched in 2023 with five original scents, including 1923, named in tribute to the brand’s centennial history.
