Bastille

Bastille began developing in 2019, when founder Marie-Hortense Varin met perfumers to explore a natural and transparent alternative to conventional fragrance; the brand dates its creation to 2020. Its founding premise was to challenge opacity in perfumery through natural ingredients and full ingredient transparency. Bastille defines its approach as liberated, engaged and genderless, balancing natural and synthetic materials while allowing perfumers freedom in olfactory creation. For its first collection, the brand worked with IFF-LMR, developing about 50 fragrances before selecting and repeatedly reworking five finalists. In 2022, Sophie Maisant acquired Bastille from Varin and continued developing it with Pascal Hyafil. Its public identity is tied to complete ingredient disclosure and predominantly natural, genderless fragrances. In 2026, Kippax Group, a Singapore-based independent beauty and wellness group, acquired the brand. Bastille’s fragrance work is collection-led rather than publicly established around one bestseller or signature scent.
