Batman

Batman was conceived in 1939 by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger for DC Comics, debuting in Detective Comics #27 on March 30 of that year. Six months later, Detective Comics #33 introduced Bruce Wayne’s defining origin, while Batman #1 in 1940 introduced the Joker and Catwoman; Gotham City was named in Batman #4 in 1941. His creative identity shifted across eras: science-fiction elements and the camp 1966 television series gave way in the late 1960s to street-level stories about crime and corruption. The 1985 Crisis on Infinite Earths reset Batman’s continuity, followed by 1987’s Batman: Year One, which streamlined his modern origin and early vigilante career. Warner Bros. established DC Entertainment in 2009 to develop DC characters across media, and DC was listed among Warner Bros. Discovery’s brands after its formation in 2022. In 2025, Warner Bros. Discovery announced plans to place DC Studios within a proposed Warner Bros. company. In February 2026, it entered a definitive agreement for Paramount Skydance to acquire WBD, subject to closing conditions.
