Ben Sherman

Founded in Brighton in 1963 by Arthur Benjamin Sugarman, who adopted the name Ben Sherman after living and working in the United States, Ben Sherman began with a shirt that combined American Ivy League influence with a back hook, a button behind the collar, distinctive fabrics, pale colours and stripes. Its early shirts were embraced by Britain’s mod movement and became associated with youth culture expressed through fashion and music. The brand remained popular among mod-revival and rude-boy audiences in the late 1970s and early 1980s, with links to The Jam, The Specials and Madness, and was adopted by Oasis, Blur and other bands during the 1990s Britpop period. After Sugarman sold the company in the mid-1970s and retired to Australia, Oxford Industries sold the brand and related intellectual-property assets to Marquee Brands in July 2015. Marquee retained ownership of the wider brand after selling the UK operations to BMB Clothing in February 2016. Today, Ben Sherman is a British lifestyle brand rooted in shirt-making, music and youth culture. For Paris 2024, it and Marquee Brands designed Team GB ceremony wear around British references, including a four-nation floral motif.
