Benefit
Benefit was founded in San Francisco in 1976 by twin sisters Jean and Jane Ford, who had moved from Indiana and worked as models and makeup artists. The sisters began with a small makeup shop called the Face Place, later adopting the Benefit Cosmetics name. The brand’s creative identity developed around humor, irreverent presentation, whimsical product names, and a playful approach to beauty; after LVMH acquired a controlling interest on September 14, 1999, the Ford sisters retained creative control. Benetint originated that same year when they created a rose-colored stain in response to a customer’s request, becoming the first product sold in the original San Francisco boutique. Benefit’s durable focus is makeup and beauty services, with brows a central area of specialization and an emphasis on beauty that makes people feel good. Its product history later extended into pore-focused skincare, with The POREfessional debuting in 2010 and Pore Care by The POREfessional arriving in 2023. In 2015, Benefit launched Bold is Beautiful, a philanthropy program supporting women and girls through proceeds from global brow-wax services.
