Betty Barclay

Betty Barclay’s European fashion business began in Mannheim, Germany, in 1955, when Max Berk acquired a license from the Jonathan Logan Group, founded Betty Barclay Kleiderfabrik GmbH, and launched an in-house collection. Its prehistory reaches back to 1938, when Berk took over a Mannheim textile company and shifted it toward women’s apparel, while a Betty Barclay teenage collection already existed in the United States. In 1972, the business acquired the worldwide trademark and usage rights for Betty Barclay from the Logan group, moving from European licensing to exclusive worldwide use and independent production. Jürgen H. Winter took over leadership of the group as managing partner in 1991 and is identified as its owner, reflecting continuity of family ownership. A repositioning and modernized logo followed in 2002. The brand’s identity has extended from women’s fashion into a broader lifestyle offering, with licensed fragrances, eyewear, and bags complementing its collections. Fragrance began in 1992 as Betty Barclay’s first licensing agreement, with Mäurer & Wirtz launching a fragrance line for the brand.
