Bioderma
Bioderma was founded by NAOS in 1977, when French pharmacist-biologist Jean-Noël Thorel integrated biology into skincare and created the first Bioderma products. Its identity is grounded in ecobiology: working with the skin’s biology while respecting its living ecosystem. Thorel developed the brand through collaboration with scientists, dermatologists, pharmacists and pharmaceutical laboratories, combining biological functions within the epidermis with cosmetic functions at the skin’s surface. In 2016, Bioderma’s activities were merged with those of Institut Esthederm and Etat Pur into the cohesive company NAOS. In 2018, NAOS created a shareholder foundation alongside the NAOS Institute of Life Science, with ownership held by a non-profit endowment fund and governance separating equity holding from decision-making power. Bioderma’s major durable innovation is micellar-water technology, invented in 1995, which led to Sensibio H2O, identified as the first micellar water. Sensibio H2O is strongly associated with makeup artists and French pharmacy culture.
