Biotherm
Biotherm was created in Monaco in 1952, with origins in the thermal waters of the French Pyrenees. Biochemist Jeanine Marissal is credited with discovering thermal plankton’s affinity with skin and patenting its use in skincare. L’Oréal acquired the brand in 1970, and Biotherm remains part of its portfolio. Following the acquisition, it opened a research center in Monaco, inaugurated by Princess Grace in 1974. In 1985, Biotherm introduced a premium skincare line for men. After eight years of research, it developed Fermogénèse in 1994, a natural fermentation process for obtaining its Life Plankton extract. The brand launched its Water Lovers program in 2012 and became an Executive Partner of Monaco’s Oceanographic Institute in 2021, associating its public identity with ocean protection, ocean science, and public ocean awareness. In fragrance, Biotherm is especially associated with Les Eaux Vitaminée, a five-mist collection containing four iconic Biotherm scents and one new fragrance. The current Eau Vitaminée Citrus Tonic uses the fragrance and formula previously sold as Eau Pure.
