Bob Mackie
Bob Mackie’s named ready-to-wear collection debuted in 1982, following his professional beginnings in 1961 as a film costume-design sketch artist. His creative identity developed through television and performance: Mackie designed the wardrobe for the entire 11-year run of The Carol Burnett Show and became closely associated with Cher’s television and concert costumes. The brand’s design language centers on theatrical costume, glamour, humor, and highly detailed performance clothing. In 1999, the Fashion Institute of Technology presented Unmistakably Mackie, a retrospective documenting more than 125 designs, sketches, photographs, and videos. Mackie was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 2002, with the Academy recording nine Emmy wins. His work on The Cher Show brought Tony, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle Awards in 2019, the same year he received the Geoffrey Beene CFDA Lifetime Achievement Award. In fragrance, Mackie is identified as his signature scent; the eponymous fragrance launched in 1991 after an earlier 1985 attempt. Elizabeth Arden acquired Riviera Concepts assets including Bob Mackie fragrance licenses in 2006, while Horizon Beauty Group currently lists Bob Mackie in its portfolio. A 2024 documentary revisited Mackie’s career and influence.
