Bondi Sands launched in Melbourne, Australia, in 2012, founded by Shaun Wilson and Blair James after their experience in the tanning business led them to develop self-tanning products. Named for Bondi Beach, the brand built its identity around an Australian beach lifestyle and an Australian-looking tan, then broadened from self-tanning into sun care and cosmetics; by 2023, its categories included self-tanning, suncare, skincare, and body products. Kao announced an agreement to acquire the Bondi Sands brands on July 31, 2023, and completed the transaction on November 1, 2023, bringing the brand into the Kao group and its global skin-protection strategy.
