Brooks Brothers

Brooks Brothers traces its history to April 7, 1818, when Henry Sands Brooks opened H. & D.H. Brooks & Co. in New York City. After his death in 1833, his sons continued the business, and in 1850 Daniel, John, Elisha, and Edward assumed leadership and renamed it Brooks Brothers. During the 19th century, the firm helped establish ready-made clothing as a significant part of American retail, building an identity around classic American style, tailoring, craftsmanship, and adapting traditional garments for American ready-to-wear. Its button-down dress shirt, introduced after John E. Brooks adapted the buttoned collar he had observed on English polo players, became a defining heritage item. Following bankruptcy in July 2020, the business was acquired by Authentic Brands Group and SPARC on September 1; Michael Bastian was appointed creative director that December, and his approach returned to the brand’s preppy heritage while incorporating sportswear and athleisure. In Spring 2025, Brooks Brothers presented a modern interpretation of classic tailoring and sportswear with nautical references associated with Newport and Bermuda.
