Byblos
Byblos was founded in Milan in 1973 as an Italian ready-to-wear brand aimed at a young, cosmopolitan audience, with bold, colorful and unconventional fashion. It began within the Girombelli family’s Genny business and became independent around 1983; its name came from the Byblos hotel in Saint-Tropez. Gianni Versace took over the creative direction in 1975, shaping an irreverent, vibrant and theatrical visual language through graphics, color, prints and dramatic silhouettes. From the early 1980s through 1996, Keith Varty and Alan Cleaver were central designers, with work described as youthful, international, colorful and resort-influenced. Prada acquired the Genny group between 2001 and 2002 and sold Byblos to Swinger International in 2002. By 2018, Manuel Facchini had taken over the brand through Byblos srl; in 2022, he became creative director, bringing a contemporary, technological and global vision expressed through sport-chic styling, hi-tech aesthetics, musical influences, sustainability and inclusivity. Byblos entered fragrance in 1990 with its first self-titled scent, followed by Byblos Uomo in 1993.
