C&A

C&A began in 1841, when Clemens and August Brenninkmeijer founded a linen and cotton fabric business in Sneek, Netherlands; their initials supplied the C&A name. The first C&A shop opened there in 1860, marking the move from warehouse-based textiles into retail. The brand developed its identity around ready-to-wear clothing for a broad everyday clientele, with early retail innovations including fixed price tags, advertising, self-service, and customer returns. C&A opened its first German store in Berlin in 1911 and its first UK branch in London in 1922. Still family-owned after six generations, C&A is connected to COFRA Holding AG, established in 2001 as the family’s central holding company. In 2023, the sale of C&A Mexico to Grupo Alfar was completed, with the C&A brand licensed to the buyer. In Europe, “Wear The Change” became the overall brand identity in 2020, followed by the “You Do You & We Do The Fashion” campaign in 2022.
