Castelbel

Castelbel was founded by Aquiles Barros in 1999 in Castêlo da Maia, Portugal; its name combines its place of origin with “Bel,” evoking beauty. The brand began with artisanal soaps and developed into scented products for the body and home, retaining Portuguese cultural references, design, and handcraft traditions as part of its identity. Early production was made exclusively for a U.S. customer; after losing that business following the economic disruption associated with the September 11, 2001 attacks, Castelbel produced scented goods for brands including Zara Home and Gant Home. In 2007, it launched Portus Cale after Nordstrom requested a Europe-made body-and-home collection inspired by Porto’s history and southern European heritage. Portus Cale Gold & Blue, Castelbel’s first ceramic collection, draws on Portuguese azulejo tiles and uses a Pink Pepper and Jasmine fragrance. Castelbel is currently part of the Portuguese BR Investments Group.
