CB I Hate Perfume
Christopher Brosius founded CB I Hate Perfume in 2004 after leaving Demeter, the fragrance company he had co-founded. He opened the CB I Hate Perfume Gallery to the public in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, in July that year, as the brand developed into an independent, art-oriented perfume practice. Its fragrances treat perfume as an artistic and experiential medium, built around specific stories and exact experiences and drawing on scent memories, places, materials, and personal associations. Brosius’s direction was informed by his 2003 inclusion of 70 scents in the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum Triennial. In 2006, he presented the solo exhibition “Scent is Life” at Philadelphia’s Esther Klein Gallery, exploring olfactory perception and the autobiographical connection between scent and memory. That memory-based approach is evident in At the Beach 1966, the brand’s most written-about scent, which recreates a 1960s beach-memory experience. In the Library similarly translates the smell of a rare 1927 book into a blend inspired by books, leather bindings, worn cloth, and wood polish.
