Fragrance house
Chattem
Chattem traces its origins to the Chattanooga Medicine Company, founded in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 1879 by Zeboim Cartter Patten and associates. Its early identity centered on patent medicines such as Black-Draught and Wine of Cardui; the company changed its name to Chattem Drug & Chemical Company in 1966 and became Chattem, Inc. in 1979 as its activities expanded into cosmetics and toiletries. Its fragrance history was brief: Chattem acquired Love’s Fragrances, a perfume line aimed at teenagers, in 1980 and divested it by 1985. Before its sale to Sanofi, the company marketed branded over-the-counter healthcare products, toiletries, and dietary supplements. In 2023, the successor organization associated with its North American consumer-health business adopted the name Opella North America and the legal form of a Benefit Corporation.
