Cirque de Soleil
Cirque du Soleil began in 1984 in Baie-Saint-Paul, Quebec, when Guy Laliberté, Gilles Ste-Croix, and fellow performers developed a traveling circus for Quebec’s 450th-anniversary celebrations. Named Cirque du Soleil, the show toured 11 provincial cities before the company’s work reached the Los Angeles Art Festival in 1987 and London and Paris in 1990. Its creative identity is built around original artistic production rather than a conventional circus format, extending into multimedia productions, immersive experiences, theme parks, and special events. The 1998 resident production O marked its first aquatic show and an important milestone in its international recognition. TPG acquired a majority stake in 2015 with Fosun and the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec as partners; the company later acquired Blue Man Productions, VStar Entertainment Group, and The Works Entertainment. After entering creditor protection in June 2020, Cirque completed a sale to its secured lenders and emerged on November 24 under ownership led by Catalyst Capital Group. In 2024, it launched its first fragrance, l’eau de parfum by Cirque du Soleil, in partnership with Flower Shop Perfumes Co.
