Cirque du Soleil

Cirque du Soleil originated in Baie-Saint-Paul, Quebec, from Les Échassiers de Baie-Saint-Paul, a street-theatre group founded by Gilles Ste-Croix. In 1984, Guy Laliberté proposed Cirque du Soleil for Quebec’s 450th-anniversary celebrations, and its first production, Le Grand Tour, toured Gaspé and ten other Quebec cities. Its early creative model was an animal-free, dramatic form of circus combining street-performance traditions with costumes, lighting, and original music, with a stated mission to invoke imagination, provoke the senses, and evoke emotions. Its first U.S. visit came in 1987, when We Reinvent the Circus was presented at the Los Angeles Art Festival before moving to San Diego and Santa Monica. Performances reached London and Paris in 1990; in 1992, the company began a year-long Las Vegas engagement with Nouvelle Expérience, and in 1993 signed a ten-year contract for Mystère, a permanent production at Treasure Island. In 1998, O opened at the Bellagio as its first aquatic show, while La Nouba opened at Walt Disney World Resort. After a 2020 sale to secured lenders led by Catalyst Capital Group, the company relaunched in 2021 under the creditor group’s ownership. In May 2024, it introduced its first fragrance, l’eau de parfum by Cirque du Soleil.
