Fragrance house
Cognoscenti
Cognoscenti is a San Francisco fragrance house founded by perfumer Dannielle Sergent, whose unisex line debuted in 2012. Sergent came to fragrance after working as an architect and painter during an economic downturn, studying with Bay Area perfumer Yosh Han before developing Cognoscenti. Based in downtown San Francisco, the house combines old-world fragrance craftsmanship with a modern sensibility: Sergent’s process is intuitive and akin to painting, while the scents are presented as abstract compositions rather than evocations of a particular place or memory. The collection leans toward woody, herbal, and aromatic compositions, using both natural materials and aroma molecules while avoiding sweet or overly floral blends. It began with three scents in 2012 and later included No. 44 Fire and Rain. Early recognition included multiple awards at artisan-fragrance salons and selection as an official TasteTV fragrance. No. 16 Tomato Leather was singled out as an unusually distinctive composition built around tomato leaf and leather.
