Fragrance house
Commodity
Commodity was launched in 2013 through a Kickstarter campaign by Los Angeles branding-agency founders Yo Santosa and Owen Gee, who sought to personalize and digitize fragrance shopping. In 2014, Lagovent Ventures Group partner Konstantin Glasmacher took over, and the brand shifted from a try-at-home, direct-to-consumer model toward a more traditional fragrance business. After changing hands multiple times between 2016 and 2019, Commodity ceased operating in April 2019. Vicken Arslanian, owner of fragrance distributor Europerfumes, acquired the brand in August that year and engaged ico Design to refocus it around ethical, elemental and atypical principles. Its post-acquisition identity presents Commodity as a Modern American Perfumery, dispensing with gendered classification and traditional fragrance terminology. The brand’s defining Scent Space framework offers each fragrance in Personal, Expressive and Bold versions, allowing wearers to choose projection level. Milk has been identified as Commodity’s second-best-selling fragrance and newest bestseller.
