Cosmopolitan
Cosmopolitan began publication in 1886 as a family magazine, with Schlicht and Field as its original publisher. After its early family-magazine phase, it became a venue for literary fiction and later developed into a women’s magazine. William Randolph Hearst purchased the title in 1905, after which it was associated with more sensational investigative journalism. Helen Gurley Brown became editor in chief in 1965 and transformed Cosmopolitan into a magazine for modern single career women, with frank coverage of sex alongside health, careers, fashion, beauty, and celebrity culture. Her first issue sold out and featured an article about the then-new birth-control pill. Today, Cosmopolitan is a young women’s media brand covering relationships through identity, style, and culture across its website, social platforms, and print magazine. The media brand remains part of Hearst Digital Media, and Hearst Magazine Media, Inc. is its copyright holder.
