Createur Mare
Createur Mare is the fragrance label associated with mare, a German media and publishing venture founded by Swiss marine biologist Nikolaus Gelpke. Mare began with its first magazine issue in April 1997 and expanded from marine journalism into book publishing through marebuchverlag, established in 2001; since 2008, the magazine and book operation has used the name mareverlag. Its identity treats the sea as a cultural space through independent, researched journalism and related publishing, with extensions into television and radio. In 2025, mareverlag moved to a cooperative structure: the founding deed was signed and its boards elected on 1 October, after which employees took over the organisation’s direction. Createur Mare’s first fragrance, Eau du Levant, emerged from research for mare’s April 2018 issue on the scent of the sea. Developed by Nikolaus Gelpke, mare editor Dimitri Ladischensky, and perfumer Geza Schön, it is a unisex Mediterranean chypre that evokes distance, warmth, and the Mediterranean rather than a generic aquatic accord.
