Custo
Custo Barcelona was founded in Barcelona in 1980 by brothers Custo and David Dalmau. It began with graphic T-shirts influenced by Californian surf culture, later expanding into abstract prints and introducing its first women’s collection in 1986. After its relationship with textile company Meyba ended in 1996, the brand adopted the name Custo of Barcelona, later shortened to Custo Barcelona. It presented in London in 1995 and entered the New York Fashion Week schedule in 1997, developing an international fashion identity. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, Custo garments appeared in Friends, Sex and the City, and Runaway Bride, helping make the brand internationally recognizable. In 2019, Blue Tower, owned by the Dalmau brothers, licensed Custo Barcelona to Velmar, part of Italian fashion group Aeffe, through 2028; the brothers retained ownership and continued directing its artistic identity. Color and graphic design are strongly associated with the brand’s public identity.
