Daddy Yankee

Daddy Yankee is the professional name of Ramón Luis Ayala Rodríguez, a Puerto Rican artist born in San Juan. Emerging from Puerto Rico’s early underground reggaeton scene, he helped elevate the genre into a global musical and cultural movement. In the late 1990s, he founded El Cartel Records. His 2004 album Barrio Fino debuted at number one on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart, becoming the first reggaeton album to reach that position; its single “Gasolina” helped expand reggaeton and urban Latin music worldwide. In September 2020, Universal Music Group and Daddy Yankee announced a strategic global partnership covering new music and film projects. After his farewell concert in December 2023, he announced his retirement from music, a dedication to Christianity, and a return to using his given name. In 2008, he entered fragrance with DY, a men’s scent developed through a partnership with Falic Fashion Group. On October 18, 2024, Concord announced its purchase of key elements of his music publishing and master-recording catalog from 2002 through 2019, together with certain name, image, and likeness rights.
