Demeter Fragrance Library

Demeter Fragrance Library was founded in 1993 by Christopher Brosius and Christopher Gable, then publicly launched in New York’s East Village in 1996. The launch featured Dirt, Grass, and Tomato, with Dirt inspired by soil from a co-founder’s family farm. From the outset, Demeter translated specific everyday odors and scent memories into wearable fragrance rather than conventional abstract perfume compositions. In 2002, the brand was acquired by Freedom Marketing Group; Brosius left Demeter in 2004 and later launched CB I Hate Perfume. Its stated olfactory identity centers on simple, largely single-note scents that give a direct or photorealistic impression of recognizable subjects, while layering allows wearers to personalize them. The library now comprises more than 300 scents and retains its focus on recognizable olfactory experiences and memory. Dirt was described as the company’s top seller in 2001. Snow won the Fragrance of the Year – Women’s Popular award in 2000, followed by Sugar Cane in 2001.
