Derek Lam
Derek Lam was founded in New York City in 2003 by designer Derek Lam and Jan-Hendrik Schlottmann. Its design identity combines a modern sensibility with calculated simplicity and thoughtful detailing, grounded in the tradition of American sportswear. Lam’s early public profile was shaped by elevated sportswear influenced by his California roots; after studying at Parsons and working for Michael Kors for about 12 years, he launched his eponymous label. In 2005, he received the CFDA Emerging Designer Award and was runner-up in the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund competition. Vienna-based luxury group Labelux acquired a majority stake in 2008, and Public Clothing Company acquired the Derek Lam business from Sandbridge Capital and Schlottmann in January 2020. The main Derek Lam brand remained with Public after its 2019 discontinuation, with its revival announced in November 2025. On April 30, 2026, NYC Alliance acquired the Derek Lam 10 Crosby brand assets, while the main Derek Lam brand was excluded and remained with Public. Derek Lam 10 Crosby entered fragrance in 2015 with a collection of 10 scents organized around different emotions and New York moments.
