Ed Hardy

Ed Hardy emerged in the early 2000s from Don Ed Hardy’s artwork. Hardy developed a creative identity that combined American tattoo traditions with Japanese aesthetics and techniques, which he studied in Japan in 1973. In 2004, Christian Audigier entered a licensing agreement with Hardy and translated the tattoo imagery across apparel, accessories, perfume, and other licensed categories, using celebrity-led promotion to build international recognition. Their partnership later ended in a lawsuit settled out of court, after which Iconix managed the brand; in 2011, licensing and marketing control transferred to Iconix, while Nervous Tattoo retained licenses for certain apparel products. As of 2026, Iconix International identifies Ed Hardy as globally owned by Iconix International Inc., and its archive lists a renewed global fragrance license with Revlon dated March 2026. The fragrance line began in 2008 as an expression of Hardy’s tattoo art; the original women’s and men’s scents ranked first and third among new U.S. fragrances through June 2008.
