Elle
Founded in Paris by journalist Hélène Lazareff, ELLE published its first issue on November 21, 1945. Its founding editorial concept brought together fashion and practical advice with news and culture, framed by an explicitly modern perspective for women. The magazine’s durable identity is captured in the principle “seriousness in frivolity, irony in gravity,” alongside a distinct perspective and set of convictions. ELLE began its international rollout in the United States in 1985; during the 1980s it also moved beyond publishing, including a first ready-to-wear collection in Japan. The brand’s wider extensions are managed through licensing across fashion, beauty, decoration, food and beverage, and other lifestyle categories. In 2019, Lagardère sold its French magazine titles, including ELLE and its extensions, to Czech Media Invest, which received an exclusive French licence while Lagardère retained ownership of the brand in France and internationally. Its fragrance collection, launched globally with ELLE L’Edition Eau de Parfum in October 2018, centers on fruity-floral fragrances and body mists.
