Elvis Presley
Elvis Aaron Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, on January 8, 1935, and moved with his parents to Memphis in 1948. He began his singing career with Sun Records in 1954, combining pop, country, gospel, and Black rhythm-and-blues influences. In late 1955, his recording contract was sold to RCA Victor; his first national television appearances, debut album, and film career followed in 1956, establishing the public identity associated with the Elvis brand. That identity drew on a fusion of blues, country, gospel, and other roots music that helped bring rock and roll to a mass audience and challenged contemporary social and racial boundaries. After Presley died at Graceland on August 16, 1977, the estate developed Graceland and its associated intellectual-property business as vehicles for preserving and commercializing his public legacy. Graceland opened for public tours on June 7, 1982. In 2013, Authentic Brands Group acquired Elvis Presley intellectual-property assets from CORE Media Group in an arrangement involving the Presley family and Joel Weinshanker. Authentic continues to identify Elvis Presley among its owned entertainment and intellectual-property brands.
