Etat Libre d'Orange

Created in 2006 by Etienne de Swardt, Etat Libre d’Orange takes its name from South Africa’s former Orange Free State, his birthplace. After seven years at Givenchy Parfums within LVMH, de Swardt established the house in reaction to standardized concepts and limited creative freedom for perfumers. The Paris-based house builds its identity around freedom from convention, strong conceptual narratives, originality, and unconventional compositions. Its standard bottle and three-color rosette are presented as visual symbols of simplicity, liberty, and difference. Sécrétions Magnifiques, created by Antoine Lie around a concept of bodily secretions including blood, milk, and adrenaline, exemplifies this provocative approach. Like This, created by de Swardt with Tilda Swinton, won a Fragrance Foundation Award. In February 2025, de Swardt described the company as retaining its free-spirited identity while becoming more structured and organized, with greater attention to product quality and business discipline. Editions des Sens SAS owns the brand’s associated intellectual-property rights. Etat Libre d’Orange marks its twentieth anniversary in 2026.
