Etienne Aigner
Etienne Aigner was born in Hungary, developed his early career in Paris, and presented a leather-goods collection under his own name in New York in 1950, marked by the stylized horseshoe-shaped A logo. In 1965, he granted Heiner H. Rankl rights to use the brand outside North America; Rankl established the Munich-based Aigner company, which developed separately from the U.S. business and adapted the designs for European markets. The American business was sold to Jonathan Logan in 1967, creating a long-standing separation between the two businesses. The Munich company expanded its categories during the 1970s and entered cosmetics in 1975, the same year its fragrance business launched Etienne Aigner No. 1. Its historical fragrance identity has also been linked with leather and suede themes. After further ownership changes, Evi Brandl was identified as the Munich company’s majority shareholder through indirect holdings and took the company private again in 2004. AIGNER first presented at Milan Fashion Week in 2009; in 2019, Christian Alexander Beck was identified as creative director, with work combining historical and cultural references with contemporary collections. In 2022, the Munich company acquired the Aigner trademark rights for North and South America, ending the documented territorial separation.
